When catastrophe hits, International Medical Corps is often one of the first humanitarian aid organizations on the scene—providing rapid and effective aid that saves lives, reduces suffering, and promotes self-reliance.

International Medical Corps has established an International Emergency Roster to ensure that emergency positions are filled in a timely manner with professionally qualified, gender balanced, geographically diverse, linguistically able, and a highly motivated corps of professionals. The team includes coordinators, logisticians, doctors and water and sanitation experts. It also includes specialists who focus on protection, prevention of sexual violence and aid for rape survivors and mental health.

Selected Emergency Response Team (ERT) members are always on standby to deploy to a crisis within 72 hours, whether they are launching into new areas or lending support to International Medical Corps teams already on the ground. International Medical Corps maintains a roster of volunteers, staff and available specialists who have been interviewed and have completed pre-deployment paperwork, orientation and training. The roster is updated on regular basis as new responders are identified and members update their areas of expertise and other relevant information. Through this expression of interest, applicants are encouraged to submit their profiles so that their information is readily available in the International Medical Corps applicant tracking system.


The primary responsibility of the Medical Doctor is to provide inpatient and outpatient medical services in a humanitarian crisis setting.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation. The tasks listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

  • Implement medical services for emergency affected population according to internationally accepted standards and/or relevant Ministry of Health standards and protocols, with focus on controlling communicable diseases.
  • Provide high quality clinical care to patients based on history, appropriate physical exam, available laboratory, imaging tests, and formulary for treatment of acute and chronic conditions
  • Conduct daily rounds on patients, initiate case discussions, monitor and document patient progress with any changes in management and prognosis and ensure adequate handover
  • Advise if further testing and/or advanced care is required and initiate the referral process
  • Initiate regular case discussions as part of hands-on training
  • Identify gaps in staff training and provide didactic and/or hands on training as needed;
  • Advocate to supervisors for other necessary training such as infection prevention and control (IPC), BLS/ACLS/ATLS, rational drug use, nursing care, etc.
  • Utilize given data collection tools and provide training to other staff as needed
  • Collect and analyze medical service data to adjust project objectives and activities as needed
  • Manage and supervise other clinical staff as directed by Medical Coordinator; participate in hiring process if needed
  • Complete standardized internal reporting as requested by Medical Coordinator or Team Leader
  • Work with Medical Coordinator to ensure regular and adequate drug and medical supplies in order to avoid stock outs and all instruments and equipment are in working order Represent and actively participate in coordination meetings and other relevant meetings as requested
  • Adhere to Code of Conduct and PSEA policies at all times
  • Any other relevant duties as requested by Medical Coordinator/Team Leader

  • Medical degree with at least 3 years experience after medical college graduation;


  • Minimum of five years of experience required, of which 3 years should be in a hospital setting in a developing country experience or resource deprived environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous NGO experience.
  • Will have excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Will have excellent self-motivation skills.
  • Experience in effectively dealing with international and headquarters staff, as well as donor agencies, government officials, and other NGO’s; the ability to work with a broad spectrum of people.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently.
  • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations.
  • Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively.
  • Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources.
  • Excellent decision making skills.
