JOB SUMMARY

The MPHSS Specialist for will be deployed to Mexico to conduct an initial assessment with specific focus on collecting information

that would enable International Medical Corps to make decision on MHPSS programming.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments of mental health and psychosocial issues
  • Initiate participatory systems for monitoring and evaluation
  • The aim of an assessment is to understand a situation in order to identify the problem(s), the source of the problem(s) and the consequences of the problem(s).
  • The purpose of an assessment is not to identify an intervention but to find out whether an intervention is needed or not.
    •  Conduct/participate in a Mental Health/Psychological needs assessment among the affected populations. This will include baseline assessments consistent with IASC guidelines and MHPSS WHO assessment toolkit (e.g. assessment of mental health problems presenting at PHC clinics and a rapid community based assessment of psychosocial needs).
  • Join or initiate emergency interagency coordination mechanisms for the provision of mental health and psychosocial support (IASC Reference group in coordination with IMC Mental Health and Psychosocial Advisor)
  •  Share relevant information.
  •  Plan joint assessments and response strategies.
  • Collaborate with existing government structures and local authorities organizing emergency response Identify suitable local partner organizations and institutions for joint MHPSS
  • Develop the strategy and mechanisms to integrate a MH/psychosocial component into IMC programs in keeping with IASC guidelines of mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies
  • Identify and where appropriate collaborate with existing indigenous healing services
  • Provide emergency mental health services and psychosocial support as needed to affected population (precise programming depending on identified needs, existing services and capacities and actions of other agencies)Assist with the development of proposals

 Hire national staff to implement emergency response and future programs.

Qualifications:

Essential Skills:

The qualified candidate will be a mental health professional with RN, Ph.D., MPHSS, MD or equivalent degree with 3+ years clinical experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Strong organizational and supervisory skills

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within different cultural environments
Ability to work within a team structure or in isolation, flexible, and can cope with stressful workloads and working with limited resources
Ability to travel on short notice to project sites by car, boat or air
A good command of verbal and written English
