Job Description

International Medical Corps is accountable to: patients and communities; host government, Ministry of Health; our organization and donors. International Medical Corps commits to a coordinated response under the national health emergency management authorities. International Medical Corps collaborates with the national health system, the cluster and the humanitarian community.

Selected personnel are on standby to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours. Personnel may deploy to new areas of operation or lend support to International Medical Corps teams already on the ground. International Medical Corps maintains a roster of volunteers and staff who have completed pre-deployment paperwork, orientation and training. The roster is updated on a regular basis. Through this expression of interest, applicants maintain professional profiles with International Medical Corps so that information is complete and readily available for an emergency response deployment.

Job Purpose

This position will support International Medical Corp emergency response delivering outpatient clinical care to disaster effected populations.

The Primary responsibility of the MHPSS – Psychologist/Social Worker is to support the implementation of services in an emergency setting.

Candidates applying to this position are indicating that they are interested in being considered for the International Medical Corps standby roster for emergency response. Roster members will only be contacted when there is an emergency response need for which the responder is qualified for. This position will not be compensated unless responders are deployed to an emergency response.

Main Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation. The tasks listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.


    1. Work within the framework of the IASC guidelines for mental health and psychosocial support in emergency settings and Sphere standards as well as IMC MHPSS Quality Standards.

    2. Liaise effectively with IMC mental health advisor to discuss and review program materials and tools (e.g. provide training materials, tools and training reports for review, and receive input on development of materials etc.)

    3. Represent IMC as requested in various cluster and working group meetings

    4. Work collaboratively with other agencies, local and international and with relevant government bodies


  1. Conduct a situational analysis of targeted health facility and staff and liaise with relevant national and local stakeholders to gather and document information for program planning in coordination with the IMC TU MHPSS advisors.

  2. Produce and share assessment report to guide program implementation


 Develop targeted training materials and tools based on global guidelines (WHO mhGAP Intervention guide) and adapted to the local context and needs.

  1. Provide training in the identification, management (pharmacological and psychosocial) and referral for selected priority neurological and substance use disorders for general health care providers (e.g. doctors, nurses) and community health workers

  2. Support and assist in training of paraprofessional staff (e.g. Community Health Workers, refugee volunteers, psychosocial workers) in mental health and psychosocial support

  3. Provide ongoing on the job supervision and mentoring as well as group and individual supervision



  1. Support the integration of mental health at the health facility level by utilizing IMCs MH PHC checklist and standards, providing feedback to clinic and IMC management and supporting sustainable and measurable systems-level integration in coordination with the IMC TU MHPSS team.

  2. Assist the PHC staff in creating a clinical mental health service for that is integrated into their working week (e.g. allocated clinic time).

  3. Provide support and advise for selection, distribution, use and tracking of psychotropic medication. Engage national stakeholders to find sustainable solutions for psychotropic medication supply at the general health care level.

  4. Collaborate with formal (e.g. government, NGOs) and informal (e.g. indigenous healers) service providers and discuss ways of providing more integrated mental health services including referral pathways.




  1. Provide oversight and technical support for facility and community level mental heath services and activities

  2. Consult on complex cases and respond to psychiatric emergencies in conjunction with PHC staff.

  3. Keep a comprehensive audit of all clinical work conducted and train PHC staff to similarly audit their work in order to provide comprehensive patient contact, management and outcome data.




  1. Organize public awareness and de-stigmatization campaigns around mental health issues with support from local staff and actively involving people with mental health problems.

  2. Support paraprofessional workers in the development of psychosocial activities in the community attached to the PHC programme.



  1. Assume responsibility for monitoring and reporting on the work to document all activities and demonstrate the extent to which the indicators listed in the proposals are being met.

  2. Coordinate project monitoring and evaluation activities, with attention to record of lessons learned for the purpose of project replication or expansion.

  3. Contribute to donor reporting and produce training reports (including data on attendance, pre-post tests and training evaluations) and other reports and visibility materials (e.g. success stories).

  4. Other duties as assigned. The duties and responsibilities listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

  • Holds a degree in Psychology or social work,
  • Has a minimum 3 years clinical experience in a hospital and / or community based mental health, preferably in humanitarian/low resource settings
  • Experience training and capacity building of health professionals
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within different cultural environments.
  • Honest, hard working and a self-motivated person
  • Ability to work within a team structure or in isolation, flexible, and can cope with stressful workloads and working with limited resources.
  • Ability to travel on short notice to project sites by car or air
  • Experience in working in the country or region is a plus.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, knowledge of local language is a plus. 

In addition to the responsibilities referenced above, candidates can expect to be living and working in austere conditions. Lifting moderately heavy objects from the ground, carrying a backpack for extended periods of time, and walking or hiking in remote locations may be necessary to perform these functions.
