Background

The Development Officer reports to the Director of Philanthropy & Campaigns, but collaborates across the team and with the broader Resource Development department

Job Purpose

The Development Officer will support the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship for the organization’s mid-level supporters through to its leadership donors. This will include collaborating with the team’s portfolio managers on generating and producing reports to inform cultivation and solicitation strategies, written content for specific donors and general external communication, briefing notes, proposals and donor reports. 

The Development Officer will be responsible for some key support functions of the Philanthropy team, including being the principal point of contact for servicing the team’s research needs, as internal liaison with the Development Operations team, and will manage the Philanthropy team’s communications calendar. The Development Offiver will ensure rigorous use of the organization’s fundraising database.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Research prospective and current donors for International Medical Corps, providing briefings and reports that will assist portfolio managers in designing and executing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies
  2. Support the Philanthropy team portfolio managers to develop and implement thoughtful, strategic cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for prospective leadership and major donors
  3. Prepare and contribute materials, agendas and briefings for external prospect and donor meetings and for internal strategy meetings
  4. Collaborate with Philanthropy portfolio managers to organize and direct the efforts of the organization’s fundraising volunteers as needed and assigned
  5. Act as the team lead on ensuring comprehensive knowledge management processes and procedures are in place to support effective fundraising, including database use, tracking of key team metrics, and compliance with other team protocols e.g. Development Operations, Finance, etc.
  6. Work with the Director to prepare regular financial reports from the database and other sources, enabling robust analysis of the team’s progress to goals
  7. Assist with Philanthropy events, participating in event planning, logistics and delivery
  8. Undertake special assignments, as directed.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years of administrative or project management experience gained in either a development office, in an NGO program context, or in a commercial environment with a sales/account management focus

Experience

  • Exceptional writing/editing communications skills and solid verbal presentation abilities;
  • Highly developed project management skills with the ability to work on own initiative, accurately to tight deadlines, and to prioritize between conflicting demands;
  • Sophisticated understanding of the role of written communications in building and maintaining complex, high-level relationships;
  • Ability to identify and create processes necessary to support effective donor outreach and stewardship;
  • Highly computer literate, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint as well as familiarity with CRM databases;
  • Ability to respond quickly to changes in short-term work priorities;
  • Comfortable working with and analyzing data – able to synthesize data into meaningful reports and visualizations;
  • Commitment to fundraising for humanitarian and international development causes.
