Essential Job Duties/Scope of Work:

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the Nutrition Manager is to manage International Medical Corps, delivery of life-saving nutrition programs in Maban three refugee camps (Doro, Kaya and Gendrassa). The overall responsibility is to supervise the implementation of treatment (CMAM) and malnutrition prevention (SBC) initiatives. Directly managed by the Site manager and technically guided by the Nutrition Coordinator, the Nutrition Manager will ensure timely execution of nutrition program activities based on assessed and verified needs.  S/He will also supervise a nutrition team of national staff and community volunteers and provide support in their capacity needs assessment and strengthening. The Nutritionist will contribute in developing and implementing nutrition information system to monitor the progress and incorporate lessons within the nutrition program. S/He will help organize regular review meetings to assess progress, issues and undertake steps for further improvement at field level.




ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manage the effective and Quality implementation of acute malnutrition treatment and prevention strategies in camp and host communities:


  • Assess the immediate lifesaving nutrition interventions needed and determine the cause of the acute malnutrition in the emergency response and formulate appropriate responses that will address the cause

  • Assess the capacity of nutrition feeding programs and identify support needed, e.g., nutrition supplies, drugs, rehabilitation, staffing etc.

  • Review the caseload of the center and identify issues for an increase or decrease in caseload on monthly basis.

  • Plan to improve access, expand coverage and provide support (drugs, nutrition supplies, incentives, materials etc.) as required.

  • Develop and supervise the implementation of effective community- based mobilization strategies to prevent acute malnutrition, ensure community participation and maximize coverage.


2. Effective Implementation of Nutrition Education and social behavior change initiatives relating to IYCF, nutrition and hygiene:



 



  • Develop and manage the Care Group (CG) and SBC initiatives as it relates to the realities in South Sudan

  • Train national staff, community nutrition volunteers and leader mothers to implement the CG program

  • Ensure efficiency and results-oriented performance in the CG component of the program; key messages acquired by beneficiaries are translated into practice.

  • Develop and implement a capacity building plan on the CG component, infant and young child feeding, and SBC for local project staff and Ministry of Health (MOH) staff

  • Liaise with the MOH officials and staff to build their capacity in the CG approach to ensure sustainability.


3. Support nutrition Program development and donor relations at field level:




  • Conduct initial nutrition sector-specific assessments and make technical recommendations for appropriate interventions, both for initial disaster response phase and for longer-term disaster risk reduction and transition phase.

  • Support in the development of nutrition program strategies.

  • Network with donors at field level regarding program development


4. Lead in national capacity strengthening processes and efforts for improving quality of Nutrition service provision:




  • Organize training for nutrition service providers on state of the art nutrition and SS national nutrition protocols/guidelines.

  • Develop tools involved in the training needs assessment of nutrition staff and volunteers and roll out.

  • Monitor and follow up training outputs

  • Document all processes and outputs of capacity building, coordination and management of activities to ensure experiences and lessons are well documented for future reference.


5. Monitor, document and report on program progress and impact:



  • Work with M&E unit in ensuring that weekly ,monthly reports are submitted timely (UNHCR, WFP and UNICEF reports)track progress on nutrition service provision

  • Take prompt decisions and incorporate findings and lessons from analysis and output of nutrition reports

  • Conduct client satisfaction assessment and report accordingly.

  • Report on program progress as required.


6. Represent IMC and maintain professional relations with CHD, UNICEF, WFP, INGOs, national NGOs and other stakeholders in the Nutrition cluster at field level:




  • Actively represent International Medical Corps in nutrition sector discussions and activities, serve as an International Medical Corps nutrition sector resource person, and display technical and organizational leadership in sectoral activities at field level.

  • Map and understand different stakeholders or counterparts in the nutrition cluster at field level and ensure IMC's objectives are understood by stakeholders clearly and precisely.

  • Coordinate International Medical Corps nutrition response and recovery activities across a wide range of actors within International Medical Corps, donors, host governments, UN and NGO partners to ensure consistency of programming attend regular nutrition coordination meeting at field level.

  • Actively participate and represent IMC at field based nutrition Cluster meetings.

  • Carry out any other nutrition related task assigned within the nutrition cluster.????

As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of International Medical Corps’ and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards.  Conducts work with the highest level of integrity. 





Qualifications:
1. BS in Nutrition required with 8-10 years of field experience or Masters Degree required in Nutrition or other relevant field, 6-8 years of international experience in nutrition response, including experience in emergency response and recovery following natural disaster  or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in assessment, program design and evaluation and technical training and support.

2. An up-to date understanding of nutrition, risk reduction, emergency response, and sustainable development concepts.

3. Knowledge in designing and implementing appropriate and effective holistic nutrition programs including ensuring that beneficiaries have access to health care, WASH, and FS programming.

4. Familiarity with design and programming processes of different donors and a general familiarity with recent initiatives such as the Global Health Initiative and Feed the Future.

5. Proficient analytical skills that demonstrate an understanding of the current concepts, priorities, and issues in program monitoring, data collection and evaluation.

6. Skills in technical proposal writing, designing and implementing nutrition programs

7. Ability to exhibit tact, diplomacy, and resourcefulness in dealing with high level officials from donor agencies, international organizations, and other foreign and domestic government officials and partners.

8. Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments within International Medical Corps, donors, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
