Essential Job Duties/Scope of Work:

International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.


The Health Advisor, based in HQ, will work with the regional health advisors and other relevant departments to understand the priorities of the regions, country programs and other HQ initiatives.

Job Purpose
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation. The tasks listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive

  1. Backstop regional health advisors to review concept notes, proposals, and reports; plan, assist with and review assessments, and provide any other required technical assistance for country teams and HQ departments if the regional health advisors are unable to, due to travel, leave or other circumstances
  2. Serve as the health focal point for the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) for international and domestic responses, including deployments as needed
  3. Serve as the health focal point for New Business Development (NBD) for development of global proposals and if needed for country-specific proposals, in collaboration with regional advisors
  4. Serve as the health focal point for Resource Development for global projects and if needed for country-specific projects, in collaboration with regional advisors
  5. In collaboration with the regional health advisors, identify, prioritize and develop capacity statements for health and health related programming
  6. Work closely with regional health advisors on developing best practices knowledge base for evidence-based programming, including updating clinical protocols as needed
  7. Work with IT and Comms to revamp IMC website and continue to update it
  8. Receive, analyze and respond to research requests, prioritizing the needs and capacity of the country programs in collaboration with regional advisors
  9. Receive, analyze and respond to ad hoc requests from HQ such as GIK, Comms, etc.
  10. Represent International Medical Corps by participating in various internal and external working groups as needed
  11. Represent and participate in meetings with potential donors as needed
  12. Attend meetings and conferences as needed or requested by the Director of the Technical Unit/health sector lead, and provide written feedback about content and integration into IMC programming
  13. Share with Regional Health Advisors potential capacity building opportunities for country Medical Coordinators as well as potential new innovations for improving program implementation
  14. Any other technical work or deployments as requested by the Director of the Technical Unit/health sector lead
  15. Contribute to the creation of a positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organizations Code of Conduct, ethics, values and stand-point with regard to internal and external actors;
  16. Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps;

  • The qualified candidate will possess a medical degree, experience as a Medical Director or senior field technical staff in similar settings;


  • 3-5+ years of field experience in humanitarian relief or development programs focused on primary health care and public health in insecure settings; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in emergency responses.
  • Excellent program development skills;
  • Ability to conduct and supervise new program assessments and write cogent proposals and budgets;
  • Knowledge of donor practices, the program proposal process, and humanitarian or development program solicitations and applications;
  • Capacity to manage a large team of expatriates and local staff;
  • Excellent interpersonal and troubleshooting skills;
  • Ability to adapt to different cultures, mentalities and circumstances.


• Ability to speak English, French an asset.
• This position is expected to travel up to 50% of their time.
