When catastrophe hits, International Medical Corps is often one of the first humanitarian aid organizations on the scene providing rapid and effective aid that saves lives, reduces suffering, and promotes self-reliance.  International Medical Corps: provides safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered care; offers needs-based response according to the context and type of Sudden Onset Disaster and/or outbreak in the affected nation: adopts a human rights-based approach to their response; ensures they are accessible to all sections of the population affected by the SOD and/or outbreak particularly the vulnerable; and treats patients in a medically ethical manner consistent with the World Medical Association Medical Ethics Manual.

International Medical Corps is accountable to: patients and communities; host government, Ministry of Health; our organization and donors. International Medical Corps commits to a coordinated response under the national health emergency management authorities. International Medical Corps collaborates with the national health system, the cluster and the humanitarian community.

Selected personnel are on standby to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours. Personnel may deploy to new areas of operation or lend support to International Medical Corps teams already on the ground. International Medical Corps maintains a roster of volunteers and staff who have completed pre-deployment paperwork, orientation and training. The roster is updated on a regular basis.

In this Internship – Emergency Response Roster Recruitment ,  Interns will learn how to support recruitment for the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) Roster through the updating and maintenance of a roster of active and available Emergency Response professionals and volunteers. They will learn how first responders are screened and prepared for deployment in global emergency responses and how to update and maintain a current roster and pipeline of experienced professionals using an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) database and manual Excel spreadsheet.

Learning Opportunities and Responsibilities: 
  • Learn the types of positions that make up Emergency Response teams and required technical skills, experience and training to be considered for the Emergency Response Roster
  • Learn procedures to move interested applicants from recruitment through deployment
  • Learn how to use spreadsheets and ATS (Applicant Tracking System) database to maintain, track and search roster members
  • Assist in reviewing resumes, contacting applicants and processing required documents using ATS system
  • Determine continued eligibility and contact former responders to determine interest in future deployments and processing appropriate paperwork
  • Learn how to review and screen applicants for roster
  • Update daily  Excel tracker and ATS system
  • Attend meetings as necessary related to preparedness and on-going responses

  • Undergraduate or Masters level student or recent graduate in relevant field (Human Resources or Emergency Response)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Skills working in cloud-based environment with Sharepoint or similar system preferred
  • Strong initiative and interest in learning about international response and recruitment 
  • Work or volunteer experience in International Development or Emergency Response preferred
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Must have exceptional people skills
  • Willingness to follow all instructions, policies and procedures
